Message 10: FAITH Affirmations

“Look among the nations and watch. Be amazed and astonished. I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe even if it were reported to you.” Habakkuk 1:5 GWT

Around the world – TODAY – God is doing things that fulfill the word of the prophet Habakkuk:

In South America…
"The largest event in El Salvador's history took place in February 2005 when American evangelist Mike Francen spoke. One pastor estimated the attendance at 190,000 on the second evening; the nation's highest officials were present, including President Antonio Saca and Head of Police Mr. Menesses. A number of miracles occurred; on the first evening, three people who had been blind since birth gained their sight; on the second evening, three invalids stood up from their wheelchairs, able to walk again. The events were broadcast live on television and radio throughout the nation. Many healing wonders occurred in the preparatory conferences: the blind gained their sight, deaf could hear, tumours vanished and the lame could walk. It was just like Acts!"

In Asia…
In the country of Laos, a man comes to know Christ as His Savior and Lord. He tells this story: Soon our faith was put to the test. I was arrested by the police, along with two of the other new Christians. They wanted to force us to sign a declaration recanting our faith. We refused, and were sent to a labour camp. We had to work hard during the day, and at night, our feet were locked into painful stocks, preventing us from sleeping. After several weeks, twelve Christians were called forward at the morning roll-call. To our astonishment, the camp chief said "You're good people and can go home. But I warn you: don't talk with others about your faith, or you'll be back here soon." Back in our village, the oppression continued; the police came almost every day to force us into a confession. After a while, one of our younger Christians could no longer stand the pressure, and signed the declaration. To remove all traces of his Christianity, he tied his New Testament to a stone and threw it into the river. Three days later, a group of men from our village went fishing. When they drew in their nets, they were surprised to find a book instead of fish. To their even greater astonishment, the book was dry and undamaged! They immediately started reading, and were excited by the message. It was the supposedly disposed-of New Testament. Through this miracle, 24 families from our village started a personal relationship with Jesus."

In Europe…
France is one of the most secular countries in the Western World. But, something is up there. "Bible sales are currently at an all-time high in France," reports the French Bible Society's Christian Bonnet. Completely unexpectedly, 100,000 Bibles and 50,000 New Testaments were sold in 2003. La Bible Expliquée, a Bible with explanations for seekers, sold 80,000 copies in the first month, even in secular bookshops and supermarkets. "God, your shares are on the rise!" wrote a business magazine in a 72-page report on the sudden rise of religious interest in the post-materialistic age. Since 1950, the number of Evangelicals in France has multiplied sevenfold, from 50,000 to 350,000.”

In Africa…
Tabea Geipel works as a missionary among children living on the streets of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and often sees Muslim boys regularly come to Christ. On New Year's Day, Rama, who was baptized two days after giving his life to Christ, dared to tell his devout Muslim relatives about his newly-found faith in Jesus, and even about his baptism - despite knowing that his family may disown him and deny him his inheritance. After three days of praying and fasting, Gaspar, another street kid, went with some of his believing schoolfriends into a region known as an Islamic stronghold, to bring the Gospel to several villages. They experienced strong resistance, particularly from the witch doctors, but many people were healed and delivered by the children's prayers. Over seventy Muslims gave their lives to Christ, and are now being cared for by existing churches.

In the Islamic world…
Baptist missiologist and author David Garrison says "More Muslims have come to Christ in the past two decades than at any other point in history. In North Africa, 16,000 Muslim Berbers turned to Jesus; in a central Asian republic, 4,000 Muslims have found Christ; 15,000 Kazakh Muslims found Christ in the past 15 years. In an appearance on Al Jazeera, Sheikh Ahmad Al Qataani, a leading teacher of Islamic clerics in Libya, said 'Every hour, 667 Muslims turn to Christianity, 16,000 every day, 6 million each year!' Those numbers are certainly exaggerated, but show that Islamic experts recognise what is happening: a massive missionary movement of Muslims to Christ."

In North America…
"The number of house churches in the USA has probably doubled in the past 18 months, from 2,500 to 5,000," according to participants at a symposium organized by Church Multiplication Associates' Neil Cole in Los Angeles from 25-28 April 2005. "The main growth comes from missionary groups aiming to reach the unchurched with the Gospel and involve them in multipliable discipleship structures," says Cole. "We're expecting up to 1,000 participants at the next national House Church conference.”

Clearly – God is up to something BIG for the 21st century.

What does that have to do with us here at SUMMIT Church? WE NEED TO GET READY!

Now, this fall I’ve shared a series of messages that I’ve called the NEW Christian – where we’ve examined SEVEN key characteristics of what God is doing in the 21st century.

I’ve preached these messages as a part of the season of preparation we are in. I believe that if you and I will apply these truths to our lives – they will revolutionize us – individually, in our families and as church.

I understand that we must begin where we are. We aren’t going to be raising the dead until we believe it is possible. We aren’t going to be changed until we embrace God’s agenda. And that’s what I want us to do today.

Today – I believe God would have us – here at SUMMIT Church – AFFIRM what He is doing, and AFFIRM our desire to be involved with Him in His purposes for this church. I believe this is the agenda of God for this church in the coming months and years – He wants you and I to cooperate with Him in this preparation process, in order that we will be ready as He reveals His specific agenda.

I affirm…
1. Christ has given me a new identity! I am a saint of God, chosen by Him, a royal priest, a full-fledged member of His holy people and I belong to God – and I’m going to live like it!

• The Bible has 330 places where unsaved people are called sinners.
• The Bible has 240 places where saved people are called saints.
• And I found exactly ZERO places where saved people are called sinners!

It is time to shake off the false identity that the world has put upon you and to receive with joy the truth of who God has made you to be.

You’ve believed false things about yourself:

That we CAN’T do what is needed.
That deep down we are BAD.
That we LACK what it takes.

But that’s false. God’s Word needs to be affirmed: FOR HE SAID:

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." 1 Peter 2:9, 10

WILL YOU AFFIRM THIS WITH ME?

Secondly – we need to affirm:
2. Christ has filled me with His Holy Spirit! Daily, I will welcome the power of the Holy Spirit to fill me and to overflow into every area of life, enabling me to do the impossible in Jesus Name!

We do not walk in the flesh. We do not live out of our soul. We are spiritual people. And His Spirit living within us enables us to do His will!

Most of what we’ve seen modeled to us within Western Christianity is a Holy-Spirit-less brand of Christianity. I call it the “Try-Harder Gospel”. But – that’s why I’ve been sharing the stories I’ve been sharing with you – there is another way to life as Christians! We have the power to do what is needed – when we choose to believe it!

Jesus said:
"I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." John 14:12-14

Will you affirm your need for the Holy Spirit and for a new way of thinking?

Thirdly-
3. Christ has given me a new responsibility! Everything I possess is a gift from Him, so I’ll use it all for His purposes and glory!

Christ gives you exactly what you need to do exactly what He desires for you to do. Everything we have is a GIFT. That’s why we must get over the selfishness that says: “MINE!” and learn to use all that we have for His Name’s sake!

God was looking for someone who would do His will – searching throughout Israel for one person who would be used for His purposes. Isaiah 6:8 says:

"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"" Isaiah 6:8

Who here will respond the same way? Who here is willing to affirm that we have a priviledge to be used as His representatives on earth? We have a responsibility to be His voice and His hands.

Will you affirm that you accept this responsibility?

Fourth – we affirm that…
4. Christ has set me free! I’m no longer in bondage to my past, to Satan or to the religious regulations of man. Instead, I’ll live in outrageous freedom fulfilling every one of God’s plans for my life!

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1

In the land of the free – it’s tough to accept true freedom. We are used to legalism, perfectionism, conditional love – and when we see the offer for freedom we doubt.

But it is the truth. Christ has set you free. And we must simply choose to let Him do the deep work in our lives to show us how to live as free men and women.

Your past does not control you – when you allow Jesus to lead you!
Satan cannot have his way with you – when you follow God’s plans!

Christ calls you to join Him in living ‘outrageously free’ to fulfill His plans! Will you affirm your desire to be set free?

Fifth – we affirm…
5. Christ has shown me the truth of the Gospel! I’m fully alive in Christ and I will live this life to worship Him!

We take seriously Christ’s promise in John 10:10
“ I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10

If something doesn’t offer life – it isn’t from Christ! And if it isn’t from Christ, well, guess who the author is? And don’t you know that you have the right to rebuke the liar and enemy in the name of Jesus in order to live more fully?

If Christ has made you alive in Him, isn’t it time to tell your face?
And if you are alive in Christ, isn’t it time to put aside the childish behaviors of jealousy, envy, competition and all those other things that reflect death?
And if you are alive in Christ, when something comes along – like illness, sickness, disease and harm – isn’t it time to ask Jesus for healing, expecting Him to do what is truly best for you?

LET’S TAKE JESUS’ OFFER SERIOUSLY. Let’s affirm that we are alive in Him – and then learn how to live that way!

And to do so, we affirm that..
6. Christ had given me a new family! Christ’s church provides me the support I need to carry out my journey, as I give others that same support in return!

Everything in the world tells me to live this way is crazy. Even our families. That’s why Christ created a spiritual family – to help you live out the truth of who Christ has made you!

Look at Hebrews 10…
"Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching." Hebrews 10:22-25

In this scripture we hear five statements that begin with “let us…”
1. Let us draw near to God
2. Let us hold on to hope
3. Let us find ways to help each other live godly lives
4. Let us meet together
5. Let us encourage one another

Why do we need these ‘let us’ statements? Because by doing so we are supported in our spiritual journeys into Christ!

Which leads us directly to the 7th affirmation:
7. Christ has called me to be mature! Putting aside lesser things, I’m getting into the fight and moving forward in the things of God’s kingdom with the goal of becoming like Jesus!

It is God’s will that you become spiritually mature. Every one of you. Period.
That’s why Paul wrote this…
"It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ." Ephesians 4:11-15

In this spiritual family – we anticipate and expect that each of us will become more mature in Christ. It’s okay to be a spiritual baby if you are new to Christ – it’s not if you’ve been a Christian for 30 years. Will you affirm that it’s time to grow up and become like Jesus?

I believe God has shown me a big part of what our agenda is to be over the next year or so – we are to take these seven truths and apply to our lives. We are to become a spiritually fit church. And as we do so, He will show us how to reach more people with the Gospel. You grow – He builds.

“But make sure that you don't get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. We can't afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. Get out of bed and get dressed! Don't loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!” Romans 13:11-14 Message Translation

Jesus – do in my life the things that I do not expect and that will truly amaze! And do it that Your Name will be exalted! Amen

Message 9: A New Maturity

Renowned Christian pollster George Barna, writing in his new book Revolution, makes this bold statement about the future of Christians in America:
“There is an explosion of spiritual energy and activity we are calling the Revolution – an unprecedented reengineering of America’s faith dimension that is like to be the most significant transition in the religious landscape that you will ever experience.” – George Barna; Revolution

Authors Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch in their book The Shaping of Things to Come: Innovation and Mission for the 21st Century Church, write:
“This is a time when the need for, and relevance of, the gospel has seldom been greater, but the relevance of the church has seldom been less. If ever there was a time for innovative missionary effort in the West, it is now.” – Michael Frost, Alan Hirsch; The Shaping of Things to Come: Innovation and Mission for the 21st Century Church

James Rutz’ book Mega Shift, which details the exciting new ways God is working world-wide, says:
“Thousand of committed teams around the world are producing a new culture of responsible freedom. This is the next step up from Protestantism, though the beliefs remain the same. It is a joyful megashift away from pastor-centered, spectator religion toward a more Biblical church where God works directly through you – and you are freed from your problems and empowered to do wonders.” – James Rutz; Mega Shift

All over the world, God is raising up a generation of new Christians who are serious about become SPIRITUALLY MATURE.

For example… In the village of Mundee, India lives a young Christian man named Haroon who is becoming spiritually mature. Also living in that village is a 45 year old woman named Kulawati. Kulawati became demonized over three years ago. Her family and friends tried gurus, psychiatrists and witch doctors – no one could help her in the least.

After several months of this, Kulawati grew worse. She started crawling on all fours, eating nothing but grass, hay and weeds – by the basketful. Someone in the village got the idea – take her to the young Christian man. And they did. When Kulawati saw Haroon, she charged at him like a wild bull and had to be restrained by three large men. The startled Haroon assessed the situation and said: “I’ll be back in three days.” and left. Haroon went home and prayed and fasted for three days. At the end of the third day, he returned to where the demonized woman was being kept.

The entire village came to watch. He quickly cast out the demons. Kulawati returned to her right mind, and the entire village came to know Jesus as their Savior and Lord.

That is spiritual maturity.

Look at Ephesians 4:11-
"It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

It is God’s will that you become spiritually mature. And it seems to me, that we’d better get at it.

Now, I want to talk with you about how. Turn over to Luke 8:4

“While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." His disciples asked him what this parable meant. He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, "‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’ "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” Luke 8:4-15

In this parable of Jesus, I see four very clear responses that lead to spiritual maturity:
To become spiritually mature… you gotta…
1. FIGHT for your life! (Spiritual Warfare) Luke 8:5, 12 (Path)

In verse 5 & 12 we hear Jesus say: “As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up… The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.”

God plants His word in your heart. And Satan does everything he can to yank it out!

Becoming spiritually mature requires that we not only accept that spiritual warfare is normal, but that we learn to FIGHT with God’s weapons. We are going to start studying spiritual warfare in just a couple of weeks on Sunday mornings.

In the meantime, if you are going to become spiritually mature, you’ve got to accept the facts of life: You have an enemy who is out to destroy you.

In Jesus’ parable, did you notice the condition of the dirt that the seed landed on? HARDENED PATH. Do you know why the path is hard? Because this is the one that most people take. They many hear the gospel, but they don’t let it penetrate them and they are easy prey for Satan.

If you are going to grow spiritually, you’ve got to let God soften your heart. Just as a farmer plows the hard ground after the cold winter, your heart needs softening. But, here’s the great thing: God promises that if you’ll keep coming to Him in faith…

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." Ezekiel 36:26

God takes out the old and replaces it with something new and beautiful! And we know from the account of the creation in Genesis that everything God makes is GOOD.

Yet another reason to get into the battle – God has made your heart good! That’s why Proverbs 4:23 says…

"Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." Proverbs 4:23

Do you want to grow spiritually? Do you truly desire to become fully mature in Christ? Then learn how to fight for your life!

Here’s a second thing that Jesus’ parable teaches us: The Spiritually Mature… take a…

2. FIRM STANCE in times of testing! (Spiritual DEVELOPMENT) Luke 8:6, 13 (Rocky Soil)

Verse 6 & 13 say… “Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture… Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.” V. 6 & 13

This probably breaks my heart more than anything: A person or family come along, discover Christ, start growing – and then TROUBLES hit. Instead of hanging on to Christ, and letting Him come through for them, they GIVE UP.

It’s time for the spiritually mature to view trials, testing and troubles differently. Two reasons we need to think differently
1. Because we know we are at war
2. Because God uses trials, testing and troubles to develop us as spiritual people.

In James 1 we read…
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." James 1:2-5

I know this is a hard truth – but it is truth nonetheless: When you a going through hard times – God will use those hard time to create spiritual maturing in you!

James say: “Consider it pure joy…”

So, the spiritually maturing person encounters trouble – and He starts looking for God to show up! God is going to show up so that He can help you grow up!

So, take a firm stance – don’t get blown over by the winds of temporary troubles! Take a firm stance, ride the earthquakes of life…

"being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6

There is a third vital truth Jesus teaches in this parable…The Spiritually Mature Keep themselves…
3. FOCUSED on God’s Kingdom! (Spiritual FOCUS) Luke 8:7, 14 (Thorns)

“Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants… The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.” V. 7, 14

When I was a photographer, I made sure that the most important elements in a photograph were in sharp focus. There is something called “depth of field” which refers to how much of the image – from front to back is in sharp focus. If I wanted to make one particular element of the composition stand out, I would open up my lens which would make everything in front of and behind that element fall out of focus, causing the main element to leap out in sharpness.

If one could create a photograph of everything in all of creation – the camera lens would not be focused on you. Or me. God is the focal point of all creation! His Kingdom is what life is about. He is the center of all things.

Now in our lives, there are a number of things competing for our focus. Jesus says that focusing on worries, possessions and pleasures create immaturity. They are thorns that block your view of what is really important.

Maturing Christians focus on God and His Kingdom.

You may be a student, or a worker or a business owner – but what really matters in life is that you do what Jesus said in Matthew 6:33…

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:33

You cannot become mature, so long as you life is out of focus. You will live for a period of time on this earth, and then you will enter into eternity. This life is preparation for eternity. Prepare well. Focus on what lasts. Focus on what matters.

And lastly, the parable of the seed teaches us that… Over time the Good Soil of…
4. FAITHFULNESS produces maturity. (Spiritual TRANSFORMATION) Luke 8:8, 15 (Good Soil)

“Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown… But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” V. 8, 15

Spiritual maturity requires spiritual transformation. You cannot stay the way you are today and expect to be spiritually mature tomorrow. Just as a seed goes into the ground and is changed into a plant, which then blossoms and produces fruit – so you must be willing to undergo transformation.

Jesus said in John 12 that…
"…unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds." John 12:24.

The Seed of God came into the ground of this world – and died. Christ came to earth and died. In dying, He produced a new seed – the Gospel. The Gospel goes into your life and changes you.

By faithfully following Christ over an extended period of time, He faithfully transforms your life. We must remain faithful to Him over the long haul of life. Good times and bad times. Easy times and hard time. Exciting times and boring time.

Jesus said…
“If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit…” John 15:5

Christ calls us to remain faithful. Maturity comes as a result of faithfulness. And with maturity comes results. Jesus says: “a hundred times more than was sown…”

If you could put money into an investment that guaranteed a return of 100 times over – you’d sink every dollar, every quarter, every dime, every nickel and every penny you could find in that!

Christ promises – you live your life faithful unto me – you remain each and every day – fully devoted to Christ – and He will give you a return of 100 fold!

I need this kind of return in my life. As do you.

It is God’s will that you become spiritually mature. In this parable, He shows you how. Now, the question remains: Will you?

The world desperately needs to see Christ lived out in our lives! The day is over when people will come to church – the church must go to them! And what do we offer? LIFE! And how do we show them? Through our CHANGED LIVES.

Message 8: A New Support

I’m talking today about the new kind of support that the 21st Century Christian is seeking to find.

In this scripture we hear four statements that begin with “let us…”
1. Let us draw near to God
2. Let us hold on to hope
3. Let us find ways to help each other live godly lives
4. Let us meet together to encourage one another

• Aren’t there times when you need help in drawing near to God?
• Do you ever feel hopeless?
• Wouldn’t you like others to help you grow spiritually and live a godly life?
• When you come to church – or to a home group – isn’t ENCOURAGEMENT one of the most important things you are hoping will happen?

If we are going to experience these things – we will need a place of SUPPORT to help us along.

One of the hallmarks of this period of history is the incredible busyness of our lives. More responsibilities and distractions bombard us than anyone would have imagined even a generation ago. And frankly – if you do not develop a solid foundation of support from people who desire to grow in Christ, you will soon be staring face-to-face with burnout and depression.

God wants His church to be a place of support.

The dictionary defines support this way: “to keep something or somebody upright or in place, or prevent something or somebody from falling.”

That’s exactly what I want to talk about today. How can we – the church – provide and receive this necessary support?

Today, I want to talk about what genuine support in the Body of Christ is to look like.

1. SUPPORT MEANS THAT WE DON’T SHOOT OUR WOUNDED. WE GIVE GRACE NOT GUILT.

When a member of Christ’s church falls prey to temptation and to the enemy, we must support that brother or sister by giving them grace! They don’t need a guilt trip and they don’t need condemnation.

The 21st Century Christian realizes that…
• Showing Kindness Leads People To Repentance
The only reason that any of us have repented of our sin is because God – in his amazing kindness and mercy called us to Himself. Romans 2:4 says that…
"… God’s kindness leads you towards repentance?" Romans 2:4, NIV.

God didn’t wait until you had your act together before calling you to Himself – He offered you the grace of Jesus Christ and your responded to His kindness by repenting of your sins!

How much more so do we need to offer kindness and grace to fellow Christians who have gotten off track?
And as we do this, we take James 5:16 seriously:
"Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." James 5:16

• Confessing my sin gives God the chance to heal my wounds.
The support of the 21st Century Christian provides a safe environment of confession, in order that God can bring about the needed healing in our lives. So long as we hide our sins, we will remain sick and dying, but when a supportive, loving environment of openness and honesty is created, people will feel free to confess their sin and discover the amazing healing that God does in such an environment!

And the amazing thing that happens is that God moves in, heals the brokenness and then we see that…
• Demonstrating Love Creates Unity in God’s Family
Colossians 3:13-15 says…
"Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful." Colossians 3:13-15

As Christ’s church demonstrates this type of support, UNITY amongst the church is built. We will have shared in something very real and very personal, and God will create an incredible sense of UNITY in our midst.

Jesus said… “May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." John 17:23

When we grant grace through an atmosphere of kindness, confession and reconciliation – the world stands up and takes notice!
Support means that we don’t shoot our wounded. We give GRACE not GUILT.

A second focus:
2. SUPPORT MEANS THAT WE ARE INVOLVED INTIMATELY WITH EACH OTHER. WE ARE FRIENDS, NOT ACQUAINTENCES.

In a world of concrete, steel and absolute anonymity – where neighbors don’t know each other, where family is spread out across the country – the church provides the support of shared life.

• Support means sharing my life with you.
Acts 4:32 reports the activity of the early church – and serves as a standard for us to strive towards:
"All the believers were one in heart and mind. No-one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had." Acts 4:32

They were brought together by Christ – and they became one. So much so that the fleshly nature of selfishness was put off and was replaced by the supernatural activity of sharing. In fact, skip down to verse 34 and see what these crazy Christians were doing:

“There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need." Acts 4:34, 35

Now, that is support. And nothing could be more Christlike than this. Really – in light of our guaranteed inheritance in Christ, what does a few material possessions matter?

This is the call of God upon us as His people. Demonstrating support through sharing our lives together!

And there is still another vital aspect of sharing our lives together
• Fighting for each other in spiritual warfare demonstrates support.

Satan is not happy that you are following Jesus! And as Jesus said – he will do whatever he can to steal you away, deceive you or better yet – destroy you! You cannot fight this battle alone. We need each other! We need support.

Ecclesiastes 4 says…
"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no-one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

The 21st Century Christian understands the nature of the battle, and understands the absolute necessity of support! We must have relationships with other Christians who will stand with us in the battle!

PAUL wrote in Philippians 1:27…
"…I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you..." Philippians 1:27b-28a, NIV.

We are at war. And we need to stand firm in one spirit! We need to have people in our lives who know us, who believe in us, and who will stand with us!

Support means that we are involved intimately with each other. We are FRIENDS.

And, as friends, living a shared life, we also realize that…
3. SUPPORT MEANS THAT WE SEEK TO BRING CHRIST INTO ANY SITUATION. WE KEEP A SPIRITUAL FOCUS.

Our support is different than the support baseball players give each other. It’s different than the support office workers give each other. It’s different than the support you give your elderly next-door neighbor by bringing his trash cans in from the curb – our support has Christ as it’s central figure. Our support is SPIRITUAL in nature.

Look at 1 Peter 2:9:
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." 1 Peter 2:9

God made you into priests! Priests serve as an intermediary bringing God into the lives of people. YOU bring Jesus wherever you go. And you can provide each other support by bringing a spiritual focus into whatever situation you are in.

• I show support – and receive support – as I live out my true calling: I am a priest of God!

Paul spoke to this in Colossians 3:16
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." Colossians 3:16, NIV.

This is all about SPEAKING FAITH and PRAYING BELIEVING. What comes out of our mouth can contribute or take away from the quality of the support that this church offers.

Perhaps the simplest way to do this is to pray with one another. What could be more supportive than to bring the needs of each other before the throne of God? Open your mouth – say: “Can I pray with you about this?” And then pray. You are the priests!

Another way to act as a priest of God is to bless. Speak blessings – and in doing so – you’ll restore forgotten dreams! You’ll bring conviction of sin! You’ll unlock long-dormant feelings! You’ll set free the captives!

CONCLUSION:
Let us draw near to God
Let us hold on to hope
Let us find ways to help each other live godly lives
Let us meet together to encourage one another

God is calling you to support one another in the journey into Him. The day of the passive Christian draws rapidly to close! Thank God!

The day of simply being a spectator in the Body of Christ is over! God is calling – and He is saying: “you are the body of Christ – live! Rise up! Be active! Be strong in me!

God says in Psalms 81: “Open wide your mouth and I will fill it!”

Open wide your mouth and minister in my name! Open wide your mouth and praise my name!

If the 21st Century Church is to reach its potential, it will be because YOU – the 21st Century Christian rise up and provide SUPPORT to one another!

This week – I challenge you – reach out to at least one other Christian – and provide them with some sort of support.

Message 7: A New Understanding of the Gospel

When you hear the word “Gospel” what images and words come to mind?
• The New Testament?
• Jesus hanging on the Cross?
• “Good News”?
• Billy Graham preaching?

Those are all a part of the Gospel. But the Gospel is far more than that. That’s what we are going to look at today – as we continue our series on the 21st Century Christian.

But, first let me review where we’ve been:
The 21st Century Christian…
• Has had a change of identity from sinner to saint of God!
• Has been empowered by the Holy Spirit to do even greater things that Jesus!
• Has authority over the devil, demons and illness to demonstrate the Kingdom of God!
• Has responsibility to speak faith – fighting against satan and fighting for people!
• Ha been given utter freedom to be exactly the person God created them to be!

Today I want to focus our thoughts on the true meaning of the Gospel. God is raising up a generation of Christians – world-wide – who understand the implications and meaning of the Gospel, and as a result, are becoming fully alive in Christ!

One Christian said: “The glory of God is man fully alive.” And I agree. Too many Christians are walking zombies, saying all the right things, but not experiencing the life Christ offers.

The Gospel is an offer to become fully alive.

Jesus said: “come to me to have life.” John 5:40

David wrote of his relationship with God: “You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." Psalms 16:11

This life that I speak of is not a life that is based upon circumstances and ‘good times’ – it is a life of faith that cannot be shaken by the temporal earthquakes this world and Satan might roll your way. This life is not just for Heaven, it is also for today!

And this life comes through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I want to offer three categories of understanding that we must come to terms with.

The 21st Century Christian UNDERSTANDS that the Gospel is about…
1. The PERSON of Christ.

This seems obvious, of course the Gospel is all about Jesus. But, much of modern Christianity is truly more about the traditions of men, denominational systems and doctrinal truths. Churches have their creeds, their professional clergymen and their programs – very little of Jesus is really needed in many people’s lives.

But that isn’t Christianity. To be a Christian is to be a follower of Jesus. To be a follower of Jesus is to do what He would have you do. To do what He would have you do, you have to listen to His instructions. And to listen to His instructions requires a vital, living, personal relationship with Him.

Jesus said: "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." John 10:27

Do you listen to Him?
Are you in tune with Him?
Is there a constancy about your walk with Christ that enables you to have regular intimate one-on-one conversations with Him?

I’m not asking these questions to make you feel guilty – I’m asking them to challenge you to move in close to Christ – to develop a genuine friendship with Him.

For many months, Jesus has been speaking a consistent word to me about my need for HIM. When I journal, He speaks and repeatedly He says: “abide in me…” Jesus wants me to stay close to Him. To devote time and effort to being with Him. Me and Jesus, hanging out. Getting tight. Staying close.

Do you want your life to matter for the Kingdom of God? Do you want to have Him use you for His purposes? Jesus tells us exactly how. He tells us what the process is.

In John 15 He says…
"Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:4, 5

In John 15 – the word ‘remain’ or ‘remains’ is used 11 times in verses 4-10!

Christ is calling you to Himself. Not as a set of facts, not as a creed, not as a principle – no, He calls us to Himself as a PERSON.

How do you get close to this person?
The Greek word ‘remain’ – or ‘abide’ is the word literally means to ‘continue to be present’. In and throughout your day, be present unto the Lord. He is with you – everywhere you go – He is present. Cultivate His presence. Eliminate unnecessary distractions. Do you drive alone in your car? Do you listen to talk radio? Cut it back by 25% - and spend that same time with Christ. Invite Him to go with you on your commute.

The 21st Century Christian understands that the essence of their faith is not to a set of facts, to a doctrinal statement – even not to the Bible – no, The Gospel is all about the Person of Jesus Christ.

The 21st Century Christian UNDERSTANDS that the Gospel is about…
2. The RESURRECTION of Christ.

What is the most familiar symbol of Christianity? The Cross.

The resurrection is not a tack on to the ‘good news of the cross’ – it is the flip side of the same coin. The cross means that God isn’t mad at us anymore – but without the resurrection – we are all still dead! With the resurrection, we get to live forever!

"And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith… "And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins." 1 Corinthians 15:14, 17

What is the basic problem of all human beings? They all die. And death being inescapable is also permanent. One of the stronger instincts of the human being is the ability to survive. We are survivers – but we still cannot beat back death forever.

Within thirty years of Christ’s resurrection, the Gospel message had been preached in every corner of the Roman Empire. What explains this rapid expansion? The Gospel message demonstrates that the death problem has been solved!

Paul’s quick summary of the Gospel message in Romans 10:9 says…
"That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9

Do you notice that the CROSS isn’t mentioned here? But the RESURRECTION is! The Resurrection of Christ from the dead is the single most important event in history!

Why? Because the resurrection is what proves Christ’s identity as the Son of God and it is what gives us the hope of eternal life! Because Christ arose – we will too!

The early church focused on the resurrection – read Acts, read the letters of Paul – you’ll see it – they vigorously preached the resurrection of Christ. I’m not saying they didn’t preach the cross – but their focus was on the victory of the resurrection. And they changed the world with this message!

Did you know that it wasn’t until 400 years after Christ that the church began to use the cross as a symbol? The cross to the early Christians was a sign of a horrific way of being executed by the state. If Christ were executed today, we’d probably wear little electric chairs on our necklaces.

Why focus on the resurrection? Because people everywhere need HOPE. Hope that there is more to life than this one. Hope that God can do for us what medicine, exercise and good genes cannot. Hope that our lives have more meaning than simply living for 60 – 70 or 80 years and then dying only to become nothing at that point. The resurrection is HOPE!

And 21st Century Christians understand the vital importance of emphasizing the hope of the resurrection to a dying world.

Thirdly, the 21st Century Christian UNDERSTANDS that the Gospel is about…
3. An ABUNDANT LIFE in Christ.

In John 10:10 we see two different strategies:
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10
• The strategy of Satan – death.
• The strategy of Jesus – life.

The King James Version says… “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” The Greek word for ‘abundantly’ is ‘perissos’ which means… ‘to have more, beyond measure, exceedingly more, over and above, beyond what is necessary, superior, supreme, extraordinary, uncommon, etc.’

The 21st Century Christian live life at an uncommon level.

For the Gospel doesn’t just offer Heaven, but Christ offers a victorious life on earth. Christ offers you and I today a quality of life that exceeds expectations, that turns us from victims into victors, that enables us to ‘walk through the valley of the shadow of death’ with confidence and joy.

For too long, the church has not made this offer clear. We’ve substituted abundant life for rules and regulations. We’ve accepted crumbs of pleasure when God offers a feast of joy!

How do I get this abundant life? Look at John 10:10 again: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10

It seems to me that anything that takes away from true life is not from God – so, firstly –
1. Stop blaming God for your problems. God is not the author of your problems.
2. Stay close to Jesus – daily. Intimacy creates opportunity for blessing.
3. Eliminate the things that get in the way of your relationship with Christ.
4. Simplify your life so that your relationship with Christ can be more fulfilling.
5. Acknowledge that your life is part of a spiritual war between God and Satan.

It is better to fight the good fight of faith and to suffer for the cause of Christ than it is if you win the whole world and lose your soul for eternity.

You see, abundant life is not measure by worldly standards. The world looks at numbers, at possessions, at status, and ultimately at what level of power you’ve achieved – but Christ looks at humility, service, sacrifice and faith. If you aren’t investing in service, sacrifice, humility and faith before God, you aren’t living an abundant life in Christ!

Bob Erickson was one of the pastors of Water of Life Church. Water of Life is one of the fastest growing churches in the Inland Empire. You’d think that Pastor Erickson had it made. But – God was calling him to a different kind of ministry and Bob sacrificed his position at Water of Life to establish a small network of House Churches in Rancho Cucamonga. He told me: “In 25 years of ministry, I’ve never been happier or more effective than I am right now!”

Bob Bradley planted a daughter church from the great Faith Community Church of West Covina in Ontario about 14 years ago. After going through the usual pattern of new churches, including leasing a commercial building for a number of years, two years ago, God lead Bob and his wife to begin a network of House Churches in Rancho, Fontana and Ontario. Bob has told me: “I’m finally free to be a pastor, not a CEO.”

Doug Lee was the Worship Pastor at Community Baptist Church of Alta Loma for a number of years. CBS is one of the most successful churches in the Inland Empire. About 10 years ago, God called Doug to leave CBC and plant a network of House Churches that stretch from San Bernardino to Claremont. Doug has told me: “This is the best time of ministry I’ve ever experience.”

SUMMIT Church has gone through a season of pruning and we are now in a season of preparation. God is calling you and I to level of living that is only possible through genuine intimacy and dependency upon Jesus and the Holy Spirit!

Let me say something straight and clear: I’d rather live the abundant life of Christ – ministering His power and presence to those around me, than to have the ‘American Dream” that can be taken away by thieves, rust and taxes!

Hear me beloved: Don’t settle for anything less than God’s absolute best for your life! He desires to pour into your life so much blessing that you cannot contain it.

CONCLUSION: The Gospel is an offer to become fully alive.

DO YOU WANT THIS ABUNDANCE?
Get close to Jesus and do what He says. That’s all there is. There isn’t any more. If you’ll abide – remain – in Christ – He will produce the harvest in your life that you desire!

Get close to Jesus.

Today – repent of your false understanding of the Gospel
Today – confess your sin to the Lord
Today – renew your commitment to Him
Today – be filled with His Holy Spirit

Message 6: Freedom

William Wallace – played by Mel Gibson in the movie BRAVEHEART – wanted one thing: To live free. When that freedom was threatened by the tyranny of England, a warrior awoke in Wallace that is still remembered some 700 years after his murder.

FREEDOM is a powerful force. As American’s we know that our country was founded upon the principle of freedom. Wars are fought over freedom. Men and women freely give away their lives in order to protect and defend freedom.

Satan and his demons HATE FREEDOM. He wants you to be ensnared and enslaved in his web of deceit and destruction. He wants you to live captive to sin and death.

But GOD loves freedom. FREEDOM is what brought Jesus to earth. Galatians 5 says…
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is required to obey the whole law. You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." Galatians 5:1-6

The New Christian gets this message loud and clear: The 21st Century Christian has been SET FREE to put their faith into action!

What does this mean?
1. The 21st Century Christian Has Been Set Free By Christ From The Past!
We all have skeletons in our closet.
We are have things we are ashamed of.
Most of us carry within us that fear that on the Day of Judgment, God will have giant video screens in Heaven showing all of our secret sins. That wouldn’t be Heaven – that’d be Hell!

Are you a Christian? Have you placed your faith in the blood of Jesus Christ?

You see – the 21st Century Christian isn’t held back by his past – because his past has been FOREVER FORGIVEN AND FOREVER FORGOTTEN BY GOD!

"For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." Colossians 1:13, 14

Your past is not relevant, because you have been changed by the blood of Christ! The 21st Century Christian has been set free by Christ from the past. They do not sit around grieving over their past sins – instead they…
"…walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin." 1 John 1:7

The 21st Century Christian has been set free by Christ from the past – will you accept this freedom?
2. The 21st Century Christian Has Been Set Free By Christ From the Religion of Negativity!

The religions of man place a heavy burden of rules, regulations and laws. “Do this, don’t do that.”
The Jews of Jesus day were really into rules and regulations.

The Talmud – a collection of writings with the Laws of Moses included some 613 laws! And get this – 248 were positive laws and 365 were negative laws. Can you imagine waking up everyday trying to remember 613 laws to obey?

For far too long, Christianity has been known more by what we are AGAINST than what we are FOR! Churches have created long lists of “Do’s and Don’t’s” for their people.

But, just because a person keeps rules, doesn’t make them holy! You can take all the negative things out of your life – but what do you replace them with?

Jesus illustrated this in Matthew 12:43-45…
""When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation."" Matthew 12:43-45

You see, it isn’t enough to stop doing evil, you’ve got to replace it with something positive! Way too many Christians today are very proud of how they’ve stopped ‘doing this, or doing that’ but what have they filled their lives with?

The 21st Century Christian can’t be satisfied in simply stopping doing the negative behaviors – they need and depend upon the FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT to produce SPIRITUAL FRUIT in their lives! WE WILL TALK MORE ABOUT THIS NEXT WEEK.

The 21st Century Christian Has Been Set Free By Christ From the Religion of Negativity!

Now, look again at Galatians 5…
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1

Look at the word ‘freedom’ – or in the King James – ‘liberty’ – The Greek word literally means to ‘live according to design’.

True freedom is when you live according to God’s design for your life! God created you to be the Highest Creation, to rule over the earth, to have dominion and control over all other created beings, to live in true fellowship with Him and with each other. God created your Spirit to rule over your Body and Soul.

But sin crept in and ever since then there has been a power struggle within each and everyone of us. The Flesh wants control. Your emotions want control. Your Intellect demands leadership. You want what you want when you want it.
But this isn’t who you really are. This isn’t your true identity. Which is why Christ came to earth. “It is for FREEDOM that Christ has set us free!”

The word “FREE” means to ‘set at liberty’ or to ‘make us free from sin’s dominion’ over our lives!

The very purpose Christ came to earth to fulfill was to bring you back to place of true freedom! That your life would be restored to ‘pre-sin’ condition.

Freedom is costly. It cost Jesus His life. But, when He looked at you, He decided that you are a good investment. YOU ARE WORTH IT!

Paul writes:
“Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery…”

Freedom can be easily lost. We must stand in our freedom. We must fight for our freedom. Paul says ‘don’t let yourselves be burdened’ – do you get that? You cannot allow anyone or anything to make you a slave again! Christ gave you freedom – now stand in it!

There was quite a controversy in the early church about whether Greek converts to Christianity needed to become Jews prior to becoming Christians. Circumcision represents the keeping of the Old Testament Law. Paul says: “NO! The Law is of no value! The Law cannot create salvation.
LOOK AT VERSE 2…
"Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is required to obey the whole law. You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace." Galatians 5:2-4, NIV.

And as we read the next verse…
"But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value.” Galatians 5:5-6a

Righteousness comes through GRACE! God’s grace is all you need. Place your faith in His Grace and you will be FREE! You don’t need to obey the Law – you need to trust God! The Blood of Christ is all you need!

Look at the last part of verse 6:
“The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." Galatians 5:6b

This answers the question:
WHAT IS OUR PART IN THE DEAL? Our part is FAITH that is expressed in love!

Jesus said in Matthew 22…
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40

The 21st Century Christian is FREE to live in FAITH that is expressed in LOVE! My freedom in Christ isn’t so that I can run around sinning like a madman. If I do that, I have missed the point of the Gospel entirely.

Paul wrote: "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law." Romans 13:8, KJV

Faith that is expressed in love in action means that you – the 21st Century Christian rise up and you make an impact on those around you. Your life matters. You are Christ to this world!

Let me illustrate what I’m getting at by reviewing the first four characteristics of the 21st Century Christian:
I. I possess an IDENTITY that is unshakable! (Proverbs 4:23, Romans 1:7, John 14:12, Philippians 1:27, 2 Corinthians 10:5, John 8:32, Philippians 1:27)

When I came to Christ, He gave me a new identity. I am not who I used to be. I have been born again. There is nothing this world can do to me – including take my life – that changes the fact that I belong to God! I am a Child of the King! You can take my life, but you cannot take my identity!

II. I am EMPOWERED to do the impossible! (1 Corinthians 4:20, Matthew 17:14-20, Romans 12:2, 1 John 5:4-5)

No longer do I go through life ‘doing the best I can under the circumstances’. I am filled with the Holy Spirit of God. His power resides in me. It is true that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. It is true that because of my faith in Christ, I will be empowered to do greater things than Christ did! Whatever I may face, by faith, I will be victorious!

III. I have spiritual AUTHORITY over evil and illness! (Matthew 9:35-10:8, Matthew 18:1-4, 2 Corinthians 10:5, Mark 16:15-18)

Evil spirits and illness are no match for God. And because I have the Holy Spirit within me, I, along with my brothers and sisters in Christ, will rebuke Satan and His demons as they seek to destroy me and those Christ loves. Not only that, but I’ll pray believing for this sick, asking God to heal and restore them to fullness of health and live, in order that Christ would be glorified. When I show up on the scene, it is that same thing as Christ showing up! Evil spirits will run! Illness will be healed! I will operate in the authority granted me by Christ to stop Satan and to promote God’s Kingdom!

IV. I take RESPONSIBILITY to reclaim what belongs to God! (Psalms 24:1-2, Ezekiel 22:30-31, Ephesians 4:14-15, Acts 16:18, Romans 10:8-10)

Realizing that I am Christ to this lost and dying world, I will take RESPONSIBILITY to actively seek after that which is lost and to help them find their way back to God. I will speak the truth in love. I will rebuke the liar in Jesus Name. I will speak faith in life. I will bring the priorities of God to the problems of today. In all of this, I desire to be used of God to reclaim what belongs to Him!

V. I am FREE in Christ to express my faith in love towards others! (Galatians 5:1-6, Colossians 1:13-14, 1 John 1:7, Matthew 22:37-40, Romans 6:1-3, 13:8)

Fully rejecting the ‘religion of negativity’ that Satan seeks to impose upon me, I will not be held captive to the rules and laws of man. Instead, I fully appreciate and embrace the freedom that Christ has given me through His blood shed for me on the Cross. And, having been restored to freedom, I will walk in love towards those around me, in faith that they too would be restored to right relationship with God.

CONCLUSION: We are free. The gods of men would hold you back. But, Christ sets you free. And…. "…if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." John 8:36

Today is the day of freedom.
Let go of that which holds you captive, and embrace the One who sets you free.
Who here needs freedom? Who here has areas of death that are holding them in chains?

Your new identity and empowerment depend on your willingness to accept your new freedom and run with it. You have to be willing to step out in faith and use your freedom, often at some risk.

A group of house church members in China’s Anhui province sensed the leading of the Holy Spirit to go to the hospital and pray for those whom the Doctors had given up on. “You have to take risks for God,” says one believer. “We prayed for 20 days for one patient, and he was only healed at the very last.” A friend added, “We were sweating, because the family was telling us to go away because we were angering the gods. They were beginning to threaten violence against us.” In one year they prayed for 20 terminal cases, and all were healed, mostly of cancer. The church grew from zero to 200 members.

Today – it is time for you to become a 21st Century Christian: Stand - pray this prayer with me: Lift up your hands to Christ:

Jesus – I accept your gift of freedom from the past.
I will no longer be held back by my past.
Jesus – I place your blood over me as a sin offering
and I receive the purity that You give.
I am not who I used to be.
Now, I am yours. Now, I am forgiven. I am clean.
Now, I am a new person thanks to you!
Now, teach me to live in this freedom you’ve given!
Jesus, I give you (Name it)
I no longer want it. I submit it to you.
Instead of clinging to that which I know, I release it to You.
And as I release, I worship You.
For You are far greater and are worthy of my praise.
Jesus – everything I need is found in You.
Jesus – everything I long for comes from You.
Holy Spirit – fill me. Holy Spirit baptize me. Holy Spirit empower me.
Holy Spirit enable me to Worship!
Jesus – Jesus – Jesus – I worship You!

Message 5: Responsibility

Throughout the world today God is raising up a NEW Christian:

• IDENTITY that is not based upon culture, race, gender, socio-economic status or income – rather they view themselves as members of the Kingdom of God! Therefore, they are not SINNERS SAVED BY GRACE – but are THE CHOSEN PEOPLE OF GOD – SAINTS CALLED TO A HIGHER PURPOSE!

• POWER FOR LIVING that doesn’t come from self, rather they are walking in the power of the Holy Spirit empower to do the impossible in Jesus Name! Therefore, because ‘all things are possible to those who believe,’ they are exercising their God-given AUTHORITY to raise the dead, heal the sick and bring freedom to the captives!

These two truths: Identity and Power – give you the ABILITY to do whatever Christ calls you to do!

The question isn’t whether you have the ability – the question is what will your RESPONSE be! I want you to put RESPONSE and ABILITY together – and they form the word: RESPONSIBILITY.

• RESPONSIBILITY to be Christ to a sick and dying world! Because I am a child of God, walking in His power and authority, I will bring Christ’s Presence into wherever He sends me! My response is the say “Yes, I am able to do the impossible in Christ’s power!”

This RESPONSIBILITY takes Psalms 24:1-2 seriously:
“The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters." Psalms 24:1, 2

And because God owns everything, the 21st Century Christian takes back that which has been wrongfully stolen from Him!

Here’s an example from George Otis’ book God’s Trademarks. Otis speaks of a time when his father, a longtime but former employee of Lear Jet felt the prompting of the Holy Spirit to call his former boss, William Lear. Here’s the story:

“My father had worked for Lear in the late 1950s as his corporate general manager. Despite Lear’s reputation as a hard-living eccentric, my father retained a fondness for him. Years after leaving Lear’s employ, my father was prompted by the Lord to call Bill. Although the two had not spoken for many years, he still knew how to reach his home in Reno, Nevada.

Bill Lear answered the phone.

“Bill, this is George Otis. I know this may sound odd, but the Lord placed you on my heart this morning. I just had to call and find out what’s happening in your life. God’s thinking about you, Bill.”

There was a long silence on the other end of the line.

“It’s good to hear from you,” Lear said tersely. “But could you call back in ten or fifteen minutes?”

The second time Bill’s voice sounded brighter.

“I need to share something with you, George. Something amazing. When you called a few minutes ago, I was sitting at my desk preparing to take my own life. I haven’t been well and I thought my revolver was the answer.”

Lear invited Otis to fly to Reno. With Otis’s help, he found Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. He died shortly afterward, at peace, a son of the King.” (As quoted by James Rutz in MEGASHIFT)

That is what I mean by taking responsibility. The Lord placed Lear on Otis’s heart. And Otis took responsibility and picked up the phone. Eternity shook.

How many times does the Holy Spirit put something or someone on your heart and you do nothing. Eternity lies in the balance – and we must take responsibility for our part.

In the early part of Ezekiel 22, God declares His intention to destroy Israel because of this corruption and evil deeds. In verse 30-31 He searches for just one man who will rise up to fight for Israel, to be used of God to restore the people of Israel to right living. And – as we are about to read – there is no one in all the land who will take responsibility. God is looking for a warrior, and all He finds is passivity!

"I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so that I would not have to destroy it, but I found none. So I will pour out my wrath on them and consume them with my fiery anger, bringing down on their own heads all they have done, declares the Sovereign LORD." Ezekiel 22:30, 31

In our world today, God is looking to raise up a new kind of Christian who will stand before Him in the gap and take responsibility – a Spirit lead determination to reclaim that which has been stolen by the enemy and what belongs to God.

These new saints of God understand God’s highest desires and they are willing to stand up and fight – tooth and nail, with fiery passion – to make sure that He doesn’t have to settle for anything less!

Walking in our new identity, empowered by the Holy Spirit, moving in Spiritual authority – we stand up to the bully, and in Jesus Name we fight the good fight of faith!

Someone has said that “talk is cheap” – but today, I’m going to disagree with that nugget of convention wisdom.

"The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."" Romans 10:8-11

You are responsible to speak up! And what you say – has power!

I. The 21st Century Christian takes responsibility to speak the truth! – Ephesians 4:14-15

"Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ." Ephesians 4:14, 15, NIV.

As a Christian you’ve got two choices – believe the lies and get tossed like a toy boat in the ocean – or speak the truth and become like Jesus!

But God knows we need help with this. It’s easy to get caught up in the devil’s lies. It’s easy to get sucked into the vortex of his distortions! We need each other. We need to count on each other to ‘speak the truth in love…’ so that we can be free!

Let’s say you’ve got a Christian friend who is really depressed. They feel like giving up. Things are not going well for them. There vocabulary is changing – “I quit” “What’s the use” – become their mantra. What do they need?

They need you to come along side of them, and lovingly speak the truth. They need the truth. Why? Because Jesus said that the truth sets people free! And they need to be set free from Satan’s snare!

So, you come along – and appeal to their true identity. They are a Saint of God. They are Chosen and Precious to Him. So you remind them of that truth: “When I look at you, I see that you belong to Christ! I see that you love Him. I want to remind you that you are His. Nothing can separate you – even this discouraging time – from Him and from His love. You are His and He is yours.”

And you help them see, with gentleness of heart and compassion, that the sinful attitude, or behavior they are adopting doesn’t reflect who they really are. “This isn’t you. You are His. You love truth. This is leading you away from who you really are!”

And you remind them of the battle: “God wants you to experience abundant life. Real joy. Healing. Purpose, meaning and confidence. But you have a enemy who is doing everything that he can to take your eyes off of Christ and to kill you. Satan wants to kill you and everything you really stand for! And if you stay on this path, it only has one destination: death. But, when you turn back to Christ and trust Him with your life, He’ll lead you out of this mess and bring you to real life.”

And what is so cool about this – when you speak the truth in love this way – Jesus says in Matthew 18:15 that you will have…. ‘won your brother over!”

You are responsible to speak the truth in love!

But -
II. The 21st Century Christian takes responsibility to rebuke the liar!

You see, your friend who is struggling is doing so – not because they are bad, or somehow not truly saved – they are struggling because Satan is a liar and he is out to get them! So someone needs to stand up against the liar and put him in his place. Which, by the way, is hell.

Speak to the liar! He can’t hear what you are thinking. He is real and he can hear you. So stand up, gather your faith, open your mouth and rebuke Him in Jesus Name!

You’ve been given authority to tell Satan where to stick it! Paul was being troubled by a demonized girl and he finally spoke up…

"In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her.” Acts 16:18

Listen to me: When you – or when people you love – are being told lies and are struggling spiritually, it’s time to stand up, to step up and speak out: “Satan, in the Name of Jesus Christ, I command you to leave me alone!” And when you do that, he has no choice but to flee!

How much of our suffering, temptation, struggle, and failure is directly the result of demons doing their very best to lead you away from Christ? All of it.

When your friend is struggling, help them see the warfare dimension and to gather up the faith to rebuke satan!

Take responsibility and tell him where to go – in Jesus Name!

Now there is a third dimension to spiritual speech…
III. The 21st Century Christian takes responsibility to speak faith! – Romans 10:8-11

Speaking faith is taking what you believe to be true about God and His plans – and opening your mouth and declaring them!

There is great power in spoken faith! Declaring what you believe with your mouth! Opening your mouth and making a verbal stand! Vital!

I’m not talking about emotional hype.
I’m not talking about positive thinking.

I am talking about taking a stand – declaring your faith. Confessing out loud what you believe and what you are believing God to do.

So, you are sitting down with your discouraged friend, and you begin to lovingly speak faith.
“God wants to heal you. God wants to restore you. God wants for you to feel His power. God wants you to trust Him. God will take care of all our your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus!”

Is that hopeful wishing? NO! It is taking God at His Word! “God, you said it. I am choosing to believe. I am believing that you will accomplish what you’ve promised!”

God is looking – far and wide – for a people who will stand up and take their place in the battle. Is there anyone here who will respond?

“The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters." Psalms 24:1, 2

Let’s take responsibility to cooperate with the Holy Spirit in recovering what belongs to God!

Take action…

• What truth do you need to speak today?
• What lie do you need to rebuke today?
• What faith needs expressing today?

Message 4: Authority

God has always had a game plan to reclaim that which was taken from Him. And the game plan was always this:
• He’d send Jesus to the earth – to become a man and live amongst us – demonstrating to us what a non-sin-stained human life could be like – and then, Jesus would take on the guilt and responsibility of our sin, pay the debt we cannot pay, resurrect from the dead and return to His Father’s side in heaven.
• But then, He’d send the Holy Spirit to live within those who believe. The Holy Spirit would serve to comfort and guide us through life, but also to empower us to live like Jesus.

We are Christ to this dark, dying world. We are called to be His People and to invade the earth seeking those who are lost and helping them to find their way back home. And we’ve been given everything we need to accomplish this. We lack nothing.

“Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” Matthew 9:35-10:8

I want you to notice two important truths:
1. Christ bestows spiritual authority upon those who believe.
10:1 says that those who are His disciples are given authority! Authority over evil spirits and authority to heal. There is no getting around this verse.

2. Spiritual authority is God’s will for your life.
Are you a disciple of Christ? If so, it is God’s will that you exercise the authority He has bestowed upon you. Period.

Turn to Genesis 1:27:
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”” Genesis 1:27, 28

As the image bearer of God – you have been given an assignment:
1. Be fruitful and increase in number. (Don’t sit back and simply enjoy being an image-bearer – increase!)
2. Subdue the earth. ‘Subdue’ means… “to bring into subjection, under control, to conquer by force or by superior power.’
3. Rule over every living creature. ‘Rule’ means… ‘to control or direct, to exercise authority or power over, to play a dominant role in or exert a controlling influence over, and to hold preeminence in (as in abilility, strength or position).

Another was of expressing this is that God intended you to have power and dominance over the Creation.
• But that rule was lost when man sinned.
• Satan took what belonged to us and became ruler of the earth.
• When Christ died on the cross and rose again, he not only redeemed us from sin and removed the barrier between us and Him, but he also enabled us to become children of God. In so doing, he took the authority away from Satan and put it back where it belonged – in our hands!

Now get this: When we assume our spiritual authority by faith, we are equipped to exert authority over all the demonic forces and over illnesses and disease – just as Matthew 10:1 tells us…
“…and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness…”

A young man from a very poor family was granted a scholarship to a prestigious university far from home. Even though his tuition and board were paid in full, he had very little spending money. As part of the scholarship, the university agreed to pay his airfare to and from home three times a year. On each flight he’d bring a brown bag meal, and when the flight attendant would ask him if he’d like a drink or a meal, he’d politely decline. This went on for four years. And when he graduated, he received some very generous cash gifts. On his final flight home, he thought that he’d splurge, so he ate and drank to his heart’s content. At the conclusion of the flight he asked the attendant for his bill. The attendant smiled and said: “There is no bill, the food and drink is included in the price of your ticket.” The young man was astonished – he’d never been able to enjoy any of the meals because he didn’t know that they were free!

This is the same as many of us are experiencing – We are not enjoying the spiritual authority that is rightfully ours because we don’t know about it!

PREPARATION FOR SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY
God has this church in a season of preparation. One of the vital lessons we must learn is that we’ve been empowered by God with His authority!

Where do we begin?
“At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:1-4

Spiritual authority comes through childlike faith. Children accept and believe with total innocence. They don’t have preconceived ideas that prevent them from believing.

It’s time for you and I to take our preconceived ideas that hold us back from believing and to repent of them!

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5

If you are going to walk in spiritual authority – you’ve got to stop believing lies and begin to believe the truth.

Many try to understand the things of the Spirit through the intellect, but you won’t be able to! Jesus said in Luke 10:21…
“At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.” Luke 10:21

Do you want to walk in spiritual authority? Let go of your best ideas – and allow God’s Spirit to reveal the truth to you! You see, when I hold on to what I know and what I understand, it eliminates me from walking in the supernatural.

Let me give you an illustration of this from Argentine Evangelist Carlos Annacondia. They were holding an evangelistic meeting in a large city in the north of Argentina. They set up a large tent and filled it with wooden benches. A crowd gathered – and so did a swarm of mosquitoes. Everyone was slapping them and chaos was fast approaching. Here’s what Annacondia says happened next:
“God told me throw the mosquitoes out of the tent. Here is where supernatural faith was going to start working. But I said, “Lord, how do You expect me to do that? If I throw them out and they don’t go, I will be the one who will have to go.” But since He insisted, I responded, “All right, if You give me the faith to do it, I will throw them out.” I stood up and suddenly a supernatural faith came over me. Like David, face to face with Goliath, I had no doubts about victory. I said, “Brothers and sisters, stand up and let us pray and cast these mosquitoes out in the name of Jesus! Now! Right now!” In seconds all the mosquitoes were gone. The people were in awe and God’s name was glorified!” (Carlos Annacondia, LISTEN TO ME, SATAN!)

Last week we talked about how faith moves mountains – and here’s a story of how faith moves mosquitoes!

Being prepared for spiritual authority requires that we stop telling God what He cannot do and that we begin to operate in a supernatural faith that moves.

WHY DO WE NEED TO OPERATE IN SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY? Mark 16:15-18

Because signs and wonders are a sign for unbelievers!
“He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”” Mark 16:15-18

Christ tells us to go out and preach the gospel. And as we do so, we are to demonstrate the reality of His Word, His Kingdom and His Message through signs and wonders! The signs are a testimony to the reality of the message!
• Drive out demons
• Speak in new tongues
• Dodge death
• Heal the sick

Only God can do these things! And God gets the glory through them!

God has always spoken to people through signs and wonders:
• Moses’ staff becoming a snake – Exodus 4:2-9
• Israel in the desert through a cloud by day and a fire by night – Exodus 13:21
• Gideon’s fleece – Judges 6:36-40
• Jesus’ numerous healings in Israel – John 3:2, Luke 7:18-22
• Tongues at Pentecost – Acts 2:4

And God has not changed.

God uses signs and wonders – done by people exercising supernatural faith in spiritual authority – so that people would come to know Jesus as Lord and be reclaimed into the Kingdom of God!

The New Christian is EMPOWERED to do the impossible by believing that ‘nothing is impossible with God’

Christ gave you spiritual authority.

Where there is illness – take your spiritual authority and go up against it!
Where there is evil – take your spiritual authority and defeat it!

We are in a season of preparation – and we now know that we have all the spiritual authority we need to live out our faith and to take back that which belongs to Christ!

It’s time to accept it and use it. And we’ve been given everything we need to accomplish this. We lack nothing. Say it outloud: “I lack nothing!” Say it outloud: “I have everything I need in Christ Jesus!” Say it outloud: “Satan, I’m coming in Jesus name to take back what it his!”

The future of this church is dependant upon you and I taking God at His Word and putting His Word into action! You have people in your life that need what you have!

What needs reclaiming today? Let’s practice what’s been preached – let’s exercise spiritual authority over the enemy and over illness. Will you believe with me? Will you put your faith into action?
